Gateshead Senators are delighted to announce their Rookie tryouts for the 2018 Season , we are recruiting for both on field and off field staff for the following roles
Players - Junior(age 16 plus) and Senior (age 19 plus)
Gameday Staff -to support our game day operation
Coaching Staff-to support our experienced Coaches at both training sessions and on game day
Film Staff-to film our home and away games ( all equipment will be provided)
Q:Who are the Gateshead Senators?
A: The SENATORS are the North East's longest established American Football Team who compete in the British American Football National League (BAFNL www.bafanl.co.uk.) 2018 will be our 30th Anniversary season. Many UK Gridiron teams come and go in different guises however the Gateshead Senators have had a team representing them for the last 30 consecutive years and will be competing in the National North Division 2 in 2018.
Q:When do Rookie sessions start?
A: The first rookie session of 2018 will commence Sunday 8th October 2017 with further sessions held on the following dates
Sunday 5th November 2017
Sunday 3rd December 2017
The events will be held at our home ground Monkton Stadium , Dene Terrace ,Jarrow, NE32 5NJ. Registration commences at 09:30 with the session starting at 10:00 prompt
Pre season training then commences early January 2018
Q:How do I register for the sessions?
A: You will need to complete a registration form which will be given to you on the day if you are Over 18. If you are under 18 it will need to completed by a parent our guardian before you attend
Q:How old do I need to be ?
A: For insurance purposes you must be a minimum of age 13 attained to participate in training. We have both Senior and Junior teams Seniors 19+, Juniors 16 attained to 18, Youth 13 attained to 16, Women 18+
Q: How much will it cost me to play for the Senators?
A: Training costs £2.00 per session. For those that are selected to play in the 2018 Season we believe we have one of the most competitive pricing structures in the UK. For an annual membership payment all our players are supplied with:-
Uniform- Loan of Club Game Shirt and Game Pants manufactured by Nike (Home and Away)
Team Socks- you will be given your own team issue socks
Equipment- Helmet and Shoulder Pads can be provided on a loan basis for those that need them
Taping- Athletic Tape is supplied free of charge
Hudl- Individual access to film sharing site HUDL is supplied for all of our players www.hudl.com
Gatorade- Gatorade is provided to all players at our fixtures free of charge
Physio- We have a Team Physio who offers pre and post game massage as well as a taping service
Away Travel- We travel to all away games on Executive Coaches provided by Stanley Travel
Q: Why have I received an email from the SENATORS ?
A: If you received an email from us you have either contacted the Gateshead SENATORS in recent months about joining the club, or we would like to invite you join us this season. We are a family club and have current and former players from over 7 different university teams and a multitude of players who picked up the sport with no previous experience whatsoever.
Q: What happens at Rookie training sessions?
A: New recruits are put through their paces in a number of athletic tests and football specific drills. It is used to gauge how returning players have developed over the last year, and what skills new recruits have, the Coaching Staff can decide which position and which team is best suited to you. The Rookie days are open to all and no previous experience of the sport is required however we do ask that you have some athletic ability ...playing John Maddens won't be sufficient !!!.
Q: What equipment will I need?
A: All you will need is gym wear. The Rookie days are un-kitted, non-contact sessions. A tracksuit AND football/rugby boots will be fine.
Q: I have friends who would like to attend, can they come?
A: By all means, the Rookie days are an open participation event, but your friends will need to register their details by completing the registration form. Once the form has been completed we can add them to our contact database and keep them informed of any updates.
Q: I am carrying an injury, do I still need to attend?
A: Yes, we still need to see you there so we can get your registration details.
Q: The concept of a Rookie tryout scares me, should I be worried?
A: No, there will be a lot of new players there, we are all in it together and it’s in no way an intimidating atmosphere. You will never be put in a position to fail. The purpose of the event is to enable the Coaching staff to know what you’re athletically capable of and ensure that you’re playing in the position that best suits the skills you have.
Q: I have never played American Football before....
A: Don’t worry about it! ALL of our new recruits have never played the game before. We look for players with ATHLETIC ability if you have that we can Coach the rest. We have an excellent Coaching staff who will give you the technique to be making big blocks, big hits, killer tackles and electrifying touchdowns in no time. Remember, all of the current SENATORS were in your position once too!
Q: Should I bring food and water?
A: Water and Gatorade will be provided, but we welcome you to bring your own to ensure you’re always hydrated.
Q: Will the event be affected by the weather?
A: No,in the event of adverse weather we have an indoor facility we can use.
Q; I am a University player and am currently in season with my BUAFL team
A: We encourage you to attend this event, so that when your University season is over we already know who you are and what you are capable of. We schedule midweek training so it doesnt impact on University teams.
Q: I am unable to attend the Rookie days what should I do?
A: Contact us and make us aware as to why. We will be scheduling 3 different dates to give all interested players an opportunity to attend. Training is compulsory for current and new players alike, but should you have a genuine reason you are not able to make a session, we will come to a solution.
Q: I don't want to play but I would like to be involved with the club should I come along ?
A: ABSOLUTELY we have a team of backroom staff however we always need more volunteers to help on game day, in addition we are always looking to add to our Coaching staff
